DLCK Guided Tours - Bad Branch Falls Hiking Tour

DLCK Guided Tours - Bad Branch Falls Hiking Tour

The hike to Bad Branch Falls is a little over a mile (one way) and takes close to 2.5 hours at a leisurely pace. The trail will take you through an old timber hall road that was built in the 30’s or 40’s. In places where you hike, bridges were built because there was no place to build a road on the hillside due to the sandstone cliffs.

This hike is a categorized as a moderate hike because it requires climbing over rocks and walking around small ledges. Most people that can walk one mile should not have any trouble.
The scenery to the falls is breathtaking, including high sandstone cliff’s, giant hemlock pines and many different types of rock formations.

This tour includes transportation and a packed snack with water.
Hiking tours also include a walking stick & prepared backpack to use during the hike. Tours can accommodate groups of up to 8 people, with a maximum of 4 children on hiking tours, for safety purposes.

Discover Letcher County, KY Guided Tours requires ticket purchase 24 hours prior to the date and time of the event. If the tour is canceled due to inclement weather, participants will be given the opportunity to reschedule.

Carcassonne Square Dance

Carcassonne Square Dance

Carcassonne's Square Dance is known as the Commonwealth's oldest and longest-running community-sponsored square dance. Because of its unique style and history, Carcassonne is famous among square dance aficionados. Several books, magazine articles, and media stories mention Carcassonne as a square dance mecca. Admission prices have remained low, at $5 adults, $3 students 6-18, and children are free with paying adult. The community center offers home-cooked meals, snacks, souvenirs, and a playground for children. Members of the Carcassonne community are happy to give tours of the building and share its history. Dances are traditionally held on the second Saturday of each month, March through November, except October's dance is the third Saturday so the nearby community of Blackey can have its annual festival/ homecoming on the second weekend. This year, Our June date coincides with Appalshop's Seedtime on the Cumberland Festival, and a Carcassonne square dance has traditionally been a feature of this event, so the Carcassonne Council vote to designate the Seedtime dance as Carcassonne's own. It will be held at Appalshop in Whitesburg, KY, on June 8th, from 6-8 pm, with no admission charge. For all dances at Carcassonne, our doors open at 5:30, and dancing runs from 6-9 pm. Dances also feature a cakewalk or two, and we traditionally end with a Virginia Reel. We are working on a Carcassonne website, but until it comes, you can follow us on Facebook at "Carcassonne Community Center Activities," or Google "Carcassonne Square Dance" or "Carcassonne Big Set." Cowan Creek Mountain Music School

Cowan Creek Mountain Music School

Join us for one of the most magical events in the mountains!

“It’s a small, close-knit group that gathers here each year—some of the country’s finest old-time musicians, and students of all ages and levels – to celebrate our rich mountain heritage of lively tunes, heart-felt singing, spirited square dancing and storytelling.

Whether you’re an absolute beginner or accomplished musician, eight years old or eighty, you’ll have the opportunity to dig deep into the rich repertoire of Kentucky music and gain experience playing with other musicians.

Mountain music has been passed down through the generations as young learners listened to and played along with their older family members and neighbors. In keeping with this tradition, classes are taught in call and response, rather than written music.  Whatever your age or level, this will improve your ear for music, and help you join in the fun of playing with other musicians from the get-go!

It’s a jam-packed week with five full days of music classes for all levels. Each afternoon, we’ll be joined by masters of traditional music: Harlan County’s a cappella gospel singers, the Mt. Sinai Spirituals,  Lewis County fiddler Roger Cooper and our 2019 Master-in-Residence, banjoist Sue Massek. In the afternoon, students can choose between jam sessions for all levels, including a youth jam. There will be a wide variety of afternoon workshops including beginning flat foot dancing, singing at the Big Cowan Old Regular Baptist Church, fiddle, banjo and ukulele from scratch, shape-note singing and much more! And don’t be surprised if you find yourself drawn into the magic of our Roving Storyteller Randy Wilson. Each evening students, instructors and neighbors will gather for a square dance, community theater performance or faculty concert.”

We are working on a Carcassonne website, but until it comes, you can follow us on Facebook at "Carcassonne Community Center Activities," or Google "Carcassonne Square Dance" or "Carcassonne Big Set." In the immortal words of Lee Sexton, "Let's square dance!"
