Seedtime on the Cumberland

Appalshop's Annual Festival of Mountain Arts!

Seedtime's 32nd Annual year, we're celebrating youth in the mountains with a focus on Appalachian Media Institute (AMI) and The STAY Project (STAY). Seedtime has always been a time of year to portray the depth and richness of our culture and celebrate the process of passing it on to new generations. In 2018, AMI celebrates 30 years of youth media making and STAY celebrates 10 years of bringing mountain youth together to create, advocate for, and participate in safe, sustainable, engaging and inclusive communities.

This year we also kick off Seedtime weekend with Levitt AMP Whitesburg Music Series on Thursday, May 31. We'll partner with the City of Whitesburg / Letcher County Farmers' Market to bring back the Seedtime Parade on Saturday morning down Tanglewood Trail!

Amythyst Kiah of Johnson City, TN will headline Friday with her Southern gothic blues, and Kentucky singer, songwriter, and guitarist Joan Shelley closes out Seedtime on Saturday night. They are both on tour with new music and excited to visit Whitesburg again. The rest of the weekend will be filled with regional art, film, crafts and young musicians, many of which were part of AMI and STAY programming over the years.

Discover Letcher County Guided Tours - Bad Branch Falls

Discover Letcher County Guided Tours - Bad Branch Falls

The hike to Bad Branch Falls is a little over a mile (one way) and takes close to 2.5 hours at a leisurely pace. The trail will take you through an old timber hall road that was built in the 30’s or 40’s. In places where you hike, bridges were built because there was no place to build a road on the hillside due to the sandstone cliffs.
This hike is a categorized as a moderate hike because it requires climbing over rocks and walking around small ledges. During the winter, there is usually ice along the trail which can also make hiking somewhat dangerous. Most people that can walk one mile should not have any trouble.
The scenery to the falls is breathtaking, including high sandstone cliff’s, giant hemlock pines and many different types of rock formations.

This tour includes transportation and a packed snack with water.
Hiking tours also include a walking stick & prepared backpack.Tours can accommodate groups of up to 8 people, with a maximum of 4 children on hiking tours, for safety purposes.
Discover Letcher County Guided Tours require ticket purchase 24 hours prior to the date and time of the event. If the tour is canceled due to inclement weather, participants will be given the opportunity to reschedule.

Mayfest Cycling Tour: Return of Rebel Rock

Mayfest is back again in historic downtown Whitesburg! This year promises to be one of the bestest and most festest of all time! Let's prep for an evening of downtown festivities with a ride up on the Rebel! A 74ish mile loop will tour back roads of Harlan and Letcher Counties, ascending up to the infamous Rebel Rock and winding back to the hub of entertainment for beverage, grub, and music. Whiteburg Mayfest will feature local vendors and live music from two (yes, TWO!) separate music stages along Main Street. The street shuts down and the party starts up around 4 pm, so we'll be right on time and ready to get festive! Bring cash and a change of clothes, unless you want to be social in spandex, which is totally cool. A $10 donation is encouraged for the ride and will go directly to Letcher County Tourism to fund more fun in the future! Don't miss an epic climb and an epic festival. We'll meet and greet around 10:30 am at the Veteran's Museum! Those wanting a shorter ride may choose to ride home across the beautiful and springy, Kingdom Come State Park.

Discover Letcher County Guided Tours - Skylight Trail Hiking Tour

Skylight Trail begins at the top of Jenkins Mountain in the Birch Knob section of Pine Mountain and follows the ridgeline of the Kentucky/Virginia border. Along the trail are two overlooks with views over Jenkins and Virginia.
Skyview Rock Shelter is a large cave located on the trail, sheltered by rock on three sides and the top. Sunlight streams through the cave between two large openings in the shelter's ceiling.
While short in mileage, Skylight Trail takes some time to complete, because of its quick elevation change.

On the way back, hikers go through the "Cry Baby Hill", named after its difficult terrain.
This tour includes transportation and a packed snack with water. Hiking tours also include a walking stick & prepared backpack.Tours can accommodate groups of up to 8 people, with a maximum of 3 children on hiking tours, for safety purposes.
