DLCK Guided Tours - Bad Branch Falls Hiking Tour

Thanksgiving Weekend 119 To High Rock Hiking Tour

Thanksgiving Weekend 119 To High Rock Hiking Tour

The 119 to High Rock hike begins at the overlook where United States Highway 119 crosses the top of Pine Mountain near Whitesburg. It is 7 miles round trip with the option to add another 0.2 mile round trip to Mars Rock. This hike generally follows the ridge of the mountain, so there is not nearly as much elevation gain as hiking from its base to the top; however, there is enough up and down travel to keep hikers' heart rates up.

Staying on or near the ridge allows great views all along the way into both states, and this hike should be done in all four seasons to fully enjoy everything it has to offer. High Rock’s steep ridge of sandstone gives all who pursue its beauty an unparalleled 360-degree view: with the city of Whitesburg in the valley, the Cumberland Plateau on the horizon and Virginia’s coalfields beyond the tree line to the south.

High Rock is the second highest point on the Highland section of the Pine Mountain Trail and is part of the Appalachian Mountains, which are the oldest mountains in the world.
