High Rock Loop Hiking Tour

High Rock Loop is known as one of the best trails in Kentucky and offers even the most experienced hikers a challenging climb through the Bad Branch Preserve.
This extremely strenuous 7.5-mile hike has a lot of uphill elevation changes and is located nearly 2 miles north of Bad Branch Falls.

We will have my sons Bandit Trans Am there which is one of the last cars signed by Burt Reynolds himself. We will have the Colt Seaver’s Fall Guy truck coming back. We also have returning Miss Daisy Delane from Pigeon Forge Tennesee. We have a host of other special guest, such as Kenny “Skye” Walker and others, set to be with us as well. We will have ET Motorgear (Steve Jenkins) bringing their booth from Pigeon Forge selling shirts. We will have Randy Amburgey’s Big Waterebed Truck.

Every hot rodder that comes with their ride will come into Main Street by the Southeast Community College and stop in front of the Courthouse to register their car and receive a shirt and trophy. The car show staff will guide and direct you where to park. There will be inflatables, food, music, 103.9 The Bulldog will be live on location. Starting August 17th, 2019 Rob’s Garage will have on display a car that we will be selling raffle tickets on to be given away 12 months later at the August 2020 Cruise In/Car Show. All proceeds will go back into the Cruise In to make it bigger and better each year and to give away another hot rod. We will also have fans and chairs set out. Everything that we had at Garner Mountain will be there, it will just be better this time. We will have more room. We want to thank the town of Whitesburg and the Mayor James Wiley Craft for the overwhelming support in allowing us to bring our show to town. Let’s set records! Like and share and let’s give Somerset a run for its money!! Our goal is to get 500 hot rods! Drop us a line and let us know your coming with your hot rod!”

Cowan Creek Mountain Music School

Join us for one of the most magical events in the mountains!

“It’s a small, close-knit group that gathers here each year—some of the country’s finest old-time musicians, and students of all ages and levels – to celebrate our rich mountain heritage of lively tunes, heart-felt singing, spirited square dancing and storytelling.

Whether you’re an absolute beginner or accomplished musician, eight years old or eighty, you’ll have the opportunity to dig deep into the rich repertoire of Kentucky music and gain experience playing with other musicians.

Mountain music has been passed down through the generations as young learners listened to and played along with their older family members and neighbors. In keeping with this tradition, classes are taught in call and response, rather than written music.  Whatever your age or level, this will improve your ear for music, and help you join in the fun of playing with other musicians from the get-go!

It’s a jam-packed week with five full days of music classes for all levels. Each afternoon, we’ll be joined by masters of traditional music: Harlan County’s a cappella gospel singers, the Mt. Sinai Spirituals,  Lewis County fiddler Roger Cooper and our 2019 Master-in-Residence, banjoist Sue Massek. In the afternoon, students can choose between jam sessions for all levels, including a youth jam. There will be a wide variety of afternoon workshops including beginning flat foot dancing, singing at the Big Cowan Old Regular Baptist Church, fiddle, banjo and ukulele from scratch, shape-note singing and much more! And don’t be surprised if you find yourself drawn into the magic of our Roving Storyteller Randy Wilson. Each evening students, instructors and neighbors will gather for a square dance, community theater performance or faculty concert.”

Skylight View Tour

Skylight View Trail begins at the top of Jenkins Mountain in the Birch Knob section of Pine Mountain and follows the ridgeline of the Kentucky/Virginia border. Along the trail are two overlooks with views over Jenkins and Virginia.

Skylight View Rock Shelter is a large cave located on the trail, sheltered by rock on three sides. Sunlight streams through the cave between two large openings in the shelter's ceiling.
While short in mileage, Skylight View Trail takes some time to complete, because of its quick elevation change.

This trail is classified as a strenuous hike, with long steep areas of ascent and descent where hikers may need to use their hands to help climb up the trail.  On the way back down, hikers go through the "Cry Baby Hill", named after its difficult terrain.

This tour includes transportation and a packed snack with water. Hiking tours also include a walking stick & prepared backpack to use on the tour. Tours can accommodate groups of up to 8 people, with a maximum of 4 children on hiking tours, for safety purposes.

Discover Letcher County Guided Tours requires ticket purchase 24 hours prior to the date and time of the event. If the tour is canceled due to inclement weather, participants will be given the opportunity to reschedule.

Carcassonne Square Dance

6:00 PM18:00

Carcassonne Square Dance

Carcassonne Community Center’s June square dance will be on Saturday, June 8, from 7:00-9:00 pm, at Appalshop in Whitesburg, as part of Appalshop’s annual Seedtime on the Cumberland Festival. Music by Sunrise Ridge. Callers: Randy Wilson and Will Bowling. Admission is free to this dance in Appalshop’s new solar-powered pavilion. Crafts, food booths and many other activities will be available during the two-day festival, June 7th and 8th. Dancing at the Carcassonne Community Center will resume on July 13th.

Carcassonne's Square Dance is known as the Commonwealth's oldest and longest-running community-sponsored square dance. Because of its unique style and history, Carcassonne is famous among square dance aficionados. Several books, magazine articles, and media stories mention Carcassonne as a square dance mecca. Admission prices have remained low, at $5 adults, $3 students 6-18, and children are free with paying adult. The community center offers home-cooked meals, snacks, souvenirs, and a playground for children. Members of the Carcassonne community are happy to give tours of the building and share its history. Dances are traditionally held on the second Saturday of each month, March through November, except October's dance is the third Saturday so the nearby community of Blackey can have its annual festival/ homecoming on the second weekend. This year, Our June date coincides with Appalshop's Seedtime on the Cumberland Festival, and a Carcassonne square dance has traditionally been a feature of this event, so the Carcassonne Council vote to designate the Seedtime dance as Carcassonne's own. It will be held at Appalshop in Whitesburg, KY, on June 8th, from 6-8 pm, with no admission charge. For all dances at Carcassonne, our doors open at 5:30, and dancing runs from 6-9 pm. Dances also feature a cakewalk or two, and we traditionally end with a Virginia Reel. We are working on a Carcassonne website, but until it comes, you can follow us on Facebook at "Carcassonne Community Center Activities," or Google "Carcassonne Square Dance" or "Carcassonne Big Set." In the immortal words of Lee Sexton, "Let's square dance!"
