2018 Mountain Heritage Festival 5k/10k Race

  • Mountain Heritage Festival Area (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

his years race has so much to offer we're not sure where to begin. For starters, you won't find a cheaper race to participate in. We want to have as many runners as we can get this year so we have dropped the race fee down to only $15 regardless of which distance you choose to run in as long as you register by August 31. The fee will increase to $20 after that thru race day.
We also can't wait for you to put on this years super comfortable race shirt which is included with your registration. We want to say thank you to Sally Barto for designing this years awesome logo which will be on a super soft and light weight 65% Poly/35% cotton shirt. We are also going to give you three different colors to choose from. We will finalize the colors in the next few days.
We are also very excited this year to be offering customized medals made locally by Rustic Rooster. These things are going to look great and you will definitely want to show this one off. We will share the finished design on here once they are done. Medals will be given to the top 3 male and females for both the 5K & 10K race. If we can exceed 50 registered participants by Aug. 31 we will incorporate some age groups and have even more medals made. We also would like to invite those who win a medal to wear their medal and race shirt and participate in our parade on September 29.
There will also be tons of prizes and giveaways such as $100 worth of tokens to be spent at the Whitesburg farmers market which will be open during the race as well as 5 Farmers market shirts, gift certificates for local restaurants, barber shops, beauty salons, and other stores. Every runner will also receive a free handmade fruit smoothie from the Whitesburg Farmers Market once they finish the race.
So that's all the fun stuff now some details about the actual race. The race will be on Saturday, September 9 @ 9:00 am with registration starting at 8:00 am at the Whitesburg city parking lot in front of the veterans museum. We encourage you to park on the other side of the pedestrian bridge to avoid the congestion of the farmers market and our race. The course will start at the veterans museum and go to the MCHC parking lot and back. If you are running the 10K race you will just repeat the course a 2nd time. It is a very flat course and will be well marked to avoid any confusion if you're not familiar with the area. Water will be available at every mile marker as well.
There are a few different ways you can register:
Online at the following link (there will be an additional charge of $2.50 charged by the website) - https://runsignup.com/Race/KY/Whitesburg/MountainHeritageFestival5K10K
Get a form at Pine Mountain Outfitters and leave your completed for with money at the store.
If you can't make it to Pine Mountain Outfitters and don't want to pay the online registration fee we can also accept PayPal and credit/debit cards. If you would like to do this, please contact Kyle Smith @ 606-821-7900 to get registered prior to September 1 when the fee increases and then you can just complete the form at the race on race day.
We would also like to note that if you want tot participate in this race it doesn't matter if you run, walk or crawl. As long as you cross the finish line you will still receive your race shirt as well as being eligible for all the giveaways. Skylight View Hiking Tour

Skylight View Trail begins at the top of Jenkins Mountain in the Birch Knob section of Pine Mountain and follows the ridgeline of the Kentucky/Virginia border. Along the trail are two overlooks with views over Jenkins and Virginia.
Skylight View Rock Shelter is a large cave located on the trail, sheltered by rock on three sides. Sunlight streams through the cave between two large openings in the shelter's ceiling.
While short in mileage, Skylight View Trail takes some time to complete, because of its quick elevation change.
This trail is classified as a strenuous hike, with long steep areas of ascent and descent where hikers may need to use their hands to help climb up the trail.
On the way back down, hikers go through the "Cry Baby Hill", named after its difficult terrain.
This tour includes transportation and a packed snack with water. Hiking tours also include a walking stick & prepared backpack to use on the tour.
Tours can accommodate groups of up to 8 people, with a maximum of 4 children on hiking tours, for safety purposes.
Discover Letcher County Guided Tours requires ticket purchase 24 hours prior to the date and time of the event. If the tour is canceled due to inclement weather, participants will be given the opportunity to reschedule.

Pine Mountain Summit Challenge IV

The Pine Mountain Summit Challenge is back...bigger...better...and badder than everrrrr. Yup, the expert challenge course is beefed up with added mileage and added elevation. Riders of all skill level will have 3 different courses to choose from!

All routes conclude atop scenic Pine Mountain. Afterwards, cruise the 7 mile to descent back to downtown Whitesburg.

Beginner: 12 miles, begins in downtown Whitesburg and takes riders along Whitco, Little Cowan, on to the ascent up Pine Mountain. The beginner route still clocks in at 1,800+ feet of elevation but we promise, the newly minted overlooks are totally worth the climb. The downhill back home will put you right around 20 miles on the day, not too shabby!

Intermediate: 31 miles, riders leave Whitesburg and travel along the North Fork river to Roxanna and Kings Creek where they will eventually be challenged by an old friend, Cowan Mountain. Combined with descent to Whitesburg, this ride totals 37.6 and just over 3,200 feet of elevation. Yes, bananas, chocolate milk, cold water, and peanut butter will be waiting along with the view.

Expert: The expert course is 38(ish) miles and includes a new climb, Tolsen Creek. While the climb itself presents a new challenge, the new route is consistently taller with limited flat, totaling, with descent, 44.5 miles and a whopping 4,000+ feet of suffering. Of course, your hammy's will scream for mercy but the feeling of accomplishment and amount of burned calories will never feel more satisfying.

Watch for the Strava links for friendly viewing and remember, this "challenge" is only a race if you want it to be! Take it on as a personal achievement/goal or race along some of Appalachia's finest, the choice is yours.

Awards will be handed out for top 3 in the following categories:

(Expert Race)
Womens: 1st - 3rd place
Womens 50+: 1st - 3rd place
Mens: 1st - 3rd place
Mens 50+: 1st - 3rd place

(Intermediate)
1st - 3rd place

(Beginner)
1st - 3rd place

Don't miss the epic cannon-fire start at 9:00am!

The rally will feature rest/aid stations and be followed by aid vehicle. The new route will not cross the highway at Premium (woohoo!) but law enforcement will lead the rolling start from the starting line. Sign up now! >>
