This driving tour will allow participants to ride through a trail that was built in 1963 and runs parallel to the old wagon road that led from Whitesburg to Scuttle Hole Gap, and then to Stonega, Va.The Little Shepherd Trail was built by the division of forestry as an access road for fire control purposes, and to open up the area to picnickers.
The Letcher County section that the tour will cover is approximately 16 miles and runs from US 119 South at Letcher Gap to KY 160 at Hurricane Gap. From there it follows the Letcher/Harlan County line for about half of the remaining length, sometimes in one county and sometimes in the other. In its entirety, The Little Shepherd Trail travels 38 miles along the crest of Pine Mountain.
